The Day of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan is celebrated since December 1, 2012. On December 10, 2011, at a plenary session of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan the law was adopted "On amending the Law ‘On holidays in the Republic of Kazakhstan’”. The Day of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan is established to celebrate and recognise the outstanding merits of the first President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev to the Republic. The historical prerequisite and a basis for selecting the date of the holiday was an event held on December 1, 1991 year – as a result of the first nation-wide election, Nursultan Abishevich Nazarbayev was re-elected as the President of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. He won with 98.7% of votes in voting of 88.2% voters.
